They say art is subjective. And it most definitely is; people see what they want to see, it’s a reflection of themselves, their experiences and a free adventure of thought. Art overwhelms people and what’s more, it allows them to live, if only for a second, outside the box. Maybe this is the reason behind why art fairs pique the interest of the crowds and in Miami, one in particular: Art Basel.
Every year, art enthusiasts from around the world gather in one place to participate in an unparalleled event. Thousands of gallerists, artists, collectors, and “glitterati” take over the Miami Convention Center, every one of them aspiring to take in the works of 250 galleries from 31 countries. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works, as well as a vast number of satellite fairs from Downtown to Midtown, transform the city into a dynamic cultural space.
All this preamble just to point out that it’s almost that time of year again. December is approaching and with it 4 days of non-stop revelry: ongoing parties and celebrity swamped soirees, a feast of fashion icons and a showcase of the finest international and national art. Art Basel is manifestly all about wonder and joy; every day is different, every day is a surprise. That’s why attending is no simple affair. One has to carefully select where to go and what to see so as not to overload, maybe visit the convention center first –after all, it’s the main event- and then one or two satellite fairs of interest. In any case, preferences aside, it will undoubtedly be a gripping experience. A word to the wise: go.
