A Historic Moment at Monterey Motorsports Reunion
McMurtry Automotive made history at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, showcasing two of its revolutionary fan cars in a public demonstration—the first time these cutting-edge machines ran together in front of spectators. Taking place amidst the prestigious Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the display was designed to highlight the extended performance capabilities of the McMurtry Spéirling while emphasizing accessibility for non-professional drivers.
Unexpected Record-Breaking Performance
During the 10-minute demonstration, Philip Kadoorie, a historic motorsport competitor, piloted the latest McMurtry Spéirling PURE VP1 model for seven laps. Despite running at only 50% power and downforce, Kadoorie set a blistering lap time of 1:18.413, establishing a new outright EV record at Laguna Seca. This astonishing feat was achieved without specific intent, underscoring the Spéirling’s remarkable pace.
For context, this time is 6.3 seconds faster than the previous production car record held by the Czinger 21C. It also significantly outperforms the 1:26.7 lap set by the modified Tesla Model S Plaid from Unplugged Performance—an achievement that took a top-10 finish at Pikes Peak in 2023.
A Duel Between Two Fan Car Legends
While Kadoorie commanded the striking blue Spéirling PURE VP1, McMurtry’s Managing Director, Thomas Yates, took the wheel of the original silver Spéirling, a car that famously shattered the Goodwood Festival of Speed record. This was Yates’ first outing at Laguna Seca, adding further excitement to an already momentous occasion.
Fan Car Legacy: A Nod to the Chaparral 2J
The demonstration held special significance, marking over 50 years since the original fan car, the Chaparral 2J, competed at Laguna Seca in Can-Am racing. By bringing its modern interpretation of fan car technology to this legendary track, McMurtry paid tribute to the pioneering innovations of the past while showcasing the boundless potential of its contemporary designs.
Engineering Mastery: Performance Meets Accessibility
Unlike traditional high-performance track cars, the McMurtry Spéirling is designed to offer record-breaking capabilities while remaining accessible to driving enthusiasts. Kadoorie, who had only driven the previous-generation Spéirling once before, seamlessly adapted to the PURE VP1, further proving its intuitive handling and confidence-inspiring aerodynamics.

Aspirations for Future Records
Following his record-setting lap, Philip Kadoorie expressed enthusiasm for returning to Laguna Seca in the future, eager to experience the car at its full potential. With the Spéirling capable of running at significantly higher power and downforce settings, the possibility of setting an outright lap record remains an exciting prospect.
A Global Showcase: Next Stop, Lime Rock Park
With their demonstration at Laguna Seca complete, McMurtry’s groundbreaking fan cars are now en route to the East Coast, where select customers will have the opportunity to experience their astonishing performance first-hand at Lime Rock Park.
McMurtry’s Vision: Innovation Rooted in Heritage
McMurtry Automotive is on a mission to redefine high-performance automotive engineering, drawing inspiration from motorsport’s greatest innovations. Their goals include:
Making record-breaking performance accessible to track enthusiasts
Reviving legendary fan car technology for a new era
Championing small and lightweight vehicles in a world of increasing size and complexity
Showcasing the best of British innovation through cutting-edge design and engineering
Thomas Yates reflected on the event, stating:
“The world’s first fan car took pole position here in Can-Am 54 years ago—the Chaparral 2J. To have followed in those wheel tracks, demonstrating what our modern fan car can do, has been truly special. The passion from spectators, drivers, and collectors has been incredible.”
Philip Kadoorie echoed the excitement:
“Getting to drive one of my favorite tracks in the Spéirling has been an unforgettable experience. The confidence the fan-assisted aero provides is unparalleled. I’d love to return next year and push for even greater achievements.”
As McMurtry Automotive continues to push the boundaries of speed and innovation, its Spéirling fan cars are proving to be more than just record-breakers—they are the future of track performance.
